In the spring of 2018, a dispute over a sum of money tragically escalated, leading to the death of 54-year-old Douglas Madrid of Payette, Idaho. On the evening of Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Madrid was shot and killed outside a residence north of Ontario, Oregon. The cause of his death was a shotgun blast to the head.
The ensuing investigation by the Malheur County Major Crimes Team moved swiftly.
Authorities indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather a premeditated event stemming from a disagreement about money. Investigators learned that the suspects and Madrid were acquainted with one another. The conflict was reportedly over a $500 debt that Madrid was attempting to collect.
Within days of the shooting, law enforcement had identified and apprehended three suspects: Sean C. Prokop, 29, Sara R. Carter, 25, and Ryan S. Macias, 24, all residents of Ontario. A fourth suspect, 22-year-old Matthew Thomas Jaggi of Parma, Idaho, was taken into custody over the weekend following the incident. All four individuals were indicted on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, hindering prosecution, and unlawful use of a weapon. One of the suspects, Ryan Macias, alleged to police that Madrid had previously kidnapped him and had shown him videos of people being killed to intimidate him.
The investigation suggested that the suspects had planned the confrontation with Madrid. On the night of his death, Madrid met with them in the driveway where the fatal encounter took place. Witnesses reported hearing a single loud boom. When they went to check, they found Madrid unresponsive and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The suspects fled the scene but were tracked down and arrested by law enforcement.
