On January 16, 2024, a homicide occurred in Ontario, Oregon, at an area known as "The Flats," a transient camp located at 1187 NW 22nd Ave. At approximately 3:40 pm, the Malheur County Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting shots fired. A Malheur County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on the scene at 3:46 pm and found Daniel Mendoza Olvera, a 40-year-old resident of the camp, with apparent gunshot wounds.
