On the night of May 25, 2019, a young man's efforts to redirect his life were tragically cut short by violence in Southeast Portland. Lorenzo Gordon, an 18-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot outside the Springtree Apartments. Those who knew him described a young man actively working to overcome his struggles and build a better future. He had previously been enrolled in the Youth Progress program, a testament to his desire for a positive change in his life's direction.
In the
aftermath of the shooting, the investigation into Gordon's death began. For a time, there was no public information about any potential suspects in the case. The initial period was marked by a lack of leads, leaving a void in the quest for justice for the teenager's untimely death. This silence, however, was eventually broken by developments in the investigation.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of 19-year-old Michael Ramirez. In a significant breakthrough, authorities connected Ramirez not only to the murder of Lorenzo Gordon but also to another homicide. He was charged with the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Sergey Peshkov, whose body was discovered in a different Southeast Portland location. On June 18, 2019, Ramirez entered a plea of not guilty to the murders of both Gordon and Peshkov, setting the stage for legal proceedings to address the violent acts that claimed two lives.
