Adam Eugene Edgington was a 42-year-old White/Caucasian man from Nevada, Iowa, whose death came abruptly in the midst of a criminal case that had begun only days earlier. Edgington worked as an English teacher at Miller Middle School in the Marshalltown Community School District. On the night of July 8, 2021, authorities located him dead inside his vehicle in a field in rural Story County near Nevada. The Story County Sheriff's Office reported that he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities treated the death as a suicide.
The events leading up to his death began in late June, when Marshalltown police received allegations concerning inappropriate conduct between Edgington and a student in the school district. Investigators alleged that the student was 13 years old and had been in one of Edgington's classes. According to the criminal complaint, the conduct allegedly developed over the course of the preceding school year and included repeated kissing, hugging, holding hands and fondling. Police characterized the allegations as a pattern of behavior that progressed toward inappropriate physical contact while Edgington was employed as a teacher and knew the student was a minor.
On July 7, Edgington turned himself in to the Marshalltown Police Department. He was arrested and charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee, a Class D felony. The Marshalltown Community School District subsequently placed him on administrative leave while the criminal investigation proceeded. After his arrest, Edgington was released from custody pending a scheduled court appearance on July 12. He had therefore been formally accused and charged, but the case had not reached a trial and no determination of guilt had been made.
By the following evening, concern had developed regarding Edgington's welfare. Law enforcement was contacted Thursday night, July 8, and officers began searching for him at approximately 9 p.m. His vehicle was eventually located off the roadway in a field, reportedly several hundred feet from the road. Edgington was found inside. Authorities determined that the fatal gunshot wound appeared to have been self-inflicted, and reports from the sheriff's office described the death as a presumed suicide involving a firearm.
Because investigators concluded that the gunshot was self-inflicted, no outside suspect was identified in connection with Edgington's death, and there were no arrests or homicide charges resulting from the death itself. His own arrest the previous day was related solely to the allegations involving the student. His death ended the possibility of the pending charge proceeding to trial, meaning there was no conviction in that case. Later reporting concerning other investigations in the Marshalltown school district specifically noted that Edgington had been accused but had not been convicted.
The timing of the death was especially sudden: within roughly a day of surrendering to police, being charged and released, Edgington was dead before his first scheduled court appearance could take place. The case consequently remained an allegation rather than an adjudicated criminal matter. His death also occurred during a turbulent period for the Marshalltown Community School District, which was dealing with separate sexual-exploitation allegations involving other employees. School officials emphasized student safety and made crisis resources available to students and staff following the arrests and Edgington's death.
