In the early morning hours of October 1, 2020, tragedy struck in Northeast Portland when 38-year-old Michael Epps Jr., a Black male, was found shot to death. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. near Northeast 111th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. When Portland Police Bureau officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about a shooting, they discovered Epps deceased at the scene. The Oregon State Medical Examiner later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, ruling it a homicide.
