Jason Cuevas, 17, a Hispanic male, went to the Paddock on Park Row Apartments in Arlington on the afternoon of May 29, 2025, with his older brother, Bryan. Around 5:10–5:11 p.m., responding officers found both brothers outside one of the buildings with gunshot wounds; they were rushed to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. The apartment complex sits in the 400 block of West Park Row Drive, and investigators would soon learn the brothers did not live there.
As detectives began to unravel what happened, they came to believe the brothers had arranged a meeting at the complex for what police called a “high-risk transaction” that went wrong. Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, a detail that sharpened the picture of a deal turned deadly and helped shape the theory of motive.
Roughly 20 minutes after the first 911 calls, dispatchers received a separate report: a man said he had been shot in the leg on Sherry Street, nearly four miles from the complex. Officers found 19-year-old Xavier Weddington there. He claimed an unknown assailant fired at him from a vehicle as he walked to a relative's home, but investigators noted inconsistencies in his story. A witness from the apartment complex then came forward, told detectives they had seen the shooting, recognized the gunman as Weddington, and later picked him out of a photo lineup.
By the next day, May 30, members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force had located Weddington in Grand Prairie and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into the Arlington City Jail and transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Police announced that he was charged with capital murder in the deaths of Jason and Bryan Cuevas, while emphasizing that the investigation remained active.
