In the early evening of March 9, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered in east Salem, Oregon, by an act of violence that claimed the life of 20-year-old Eduardo Garcia. A Hispanic male, Garcia was the victim of a fatal shooting that unfolded near the intersection of Northeast Hayesville Drive and Northeast Reimann Street. Responding to a 911 call shortly before 5:30 p.m., deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office discovered Garcia with critical injuries.
He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but his wounds proved too severe, and he later died. An autopsy would later confirm that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, ruling his death a homicide.
The investigation into Garcia's death continued for several months, culminating in the arrests of two suspects in October 2022. The Marion County Sheriff's Office identified Yahir Cruz-Rosales, 18, and John Juarez-Juarez, 18, both of Salem, as being involved in the incident. Juarez-Juarez was apprehended on October 4, followed by the arrest of Cruz-Rosales on October 12. Following their arrests, a Marion County Grand Jury indicted both men on serious charges. Cruz-Rosales faced charges of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm, Attempted Murder in the First Degree with a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm. Juarez-Juarez was indicted for Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Murder in the First Degree, and Unlawful use of a Weapon.
Further details emerged, painting a grim picture of a targeted, gang-related attack. Investigators determined that Cruz-Rosales and Juarez-Juarez had spotted Garcia's vehicle and pursued him through traffic for over three minutes. Pulling alongside Garcia's car, Cruz-Rosales fired three shots, one of which struck Garcia in the chest. At his sentencing, Juarez-Juarez confirmed that the motive for the killing was gang-related. The investigation also revealed that both assailants had previously been victims of shootings. In March 2024, both men pled guilty to their roles in Garcia's death. Yahir Cruz-Rosales, the shooter, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder with a firearm. John Juarez-Juarez received a 15-year prison sentence for first-degree manslaughter and first-degree attempted murder.
