In a burst of violence that shattered a spring afternoon, 16-year-old Hispanic male Jose Vasquez-Valenzuela was killed on March 7, 2024, in Salem, Oregon. The fatal encounter took place at Bush's Pasture Park, a place known for its running paths and playgrounds. On that Thursday, the park became a scene of chaos when gunfire erupted between two large groups of young people who had gathered there.
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots in rapid succession, sending teenagers scattering in every direction and plunging the typically peaceful park into mayhem.
When police arrived at the southern edge of the park around 1:45 p.m., they found three male victims with gunshot wounds. Jose, a sophomore at the nearby South Salem High School, died at the scene. The two other victims, 15-year-old Damien Esquivel-Soto and another 16-year-old boy, were rushed to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. The shooting triggered a swift response from local authorities, leading to lockdowns at both South Salem High School, which is just blocks from the park, and the adjacent Salem Hospital as a precaution. For hours, law enforcement processed the scene while a community was left shaken by the violence that had claimed a young life.
The investigation into the deadly shooting quickly progressed. The day after the incident, on the evening of March 8, 16-year-old Nathaniel Shauntae McCrae Jr. turned himself in to the Salem Police, accompanied by a parent. McCrae was taken into custody without incident and lodged at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center. He faced a series of serious charges, including second-degree murder for the death of Jose Vasquez-Valenzuela, two counts of attempted second-degree murder for the injuries to the other teens, two counts of first-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.
In the end, the criminal case concluded in juvenile court. Nathaniel McCrae, then 17, admitted to a charge of second-degree murder. As part of a plea agreement, he also pleaded guilty to the unlawful use of a weapon as an adult. This resolution allowed him to avoid being tried as an adult and the potential of a sentence in an adult prison. While prosecutors had initially sought to have him tried as an adult, the agreement was reached following negotiations. The outcome was met with distress by Jose's family, who had hoped for the case to be handled in the adult court system and felt the sentence was not fair. The shooting has since sparked widespread community conversations about youth and gang violence in the Salem area.
