In a parking lot in Salem, Oregon, on September 25, 2016, a violent encounter cut short the life of 25-year-old Leonardo Martinez-Hernandez, a Hispanic male. The incident, which unfolded around 12:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of 47th Avenue NE, was believed to be the result of a gang-related confrontation. Martinez-Hernandez was shot and rushed to Salem Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he ultimately succumbed to them.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led detectives from the Marion County Sheriff's Office to a suspect. The day after the fatal shooting, authorities detained and subsequently arrested 18-year-old Isaiah Robert Garcia of Salem. Garcia was taken into custody and lodged at the Marion County Jail.
Isaiah Robert Garcia faced serious charges in connection with the death of Leonardo Martinez-Hernandez, including one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. It was alleged that Garcia not only shot Martinez-Hernandez but also fired at two juveniles who were with him at the time of the altercation. Following his arrest, Garcia was scheduled for an appearance in court to face the charges brought against him.
