On August 29, 2006, Detective Corporal Charles Eugene Smith, II, a 29-year-old police officer from the Beckley Police Department in West Virginia, was tragically shot and killed during an undercover narcotics operation. The incident occurred on South Fayette Street in Beckley, marking the first time a police officer had been killed in the line of duty in Beckley since the death of Sgt. David Lilly in 1975.
