Tymel McKinney was an 18-year-old Black/African American male whose life was taken by gunfire on April 23, 2014, outside his home on Sixth Street on Charleston's West Side. McKinney was sitting on the front porch, reportedly eating pizza with a friend, when he was shot multiple times. The attack unfolded late in the evening and was quickly treated by Charleston police as a homicide connected to escalating gang-related violence in the area.
