On the evening of April 23, 2014, in Charleston, West Virginia, 18-year-old Tymel McKinney, a Black/African American male, was sitting on a porch with friends at a residence on Sixth Street. The night was shattered by the sound of about 20 gunshots, a sudden eruption of violence that would claim the young man's life. McKinney was struck in the face and killed in what police would later describe as a shooting possibly motivated by gang retaliation. An officer patrolling nearby heard the shots and ...
