In the late hours of a Wednesday night in Huntington, West Virginia, the life of Emmanuel Lopez III, a 26-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On April 3, 2019, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Lopez was shot multiple times in the middle of the 2100 block of 11th Avenue. When investigators arrived at the scene, they found him lying in the street.
Emergency services responded, but Lopez ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
Near his body, several shell casings were discovered, pointing to a violent confrontation. The Huntington Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. In the immediate aftermath, the then Chief of Police, Hank Dial, stated that detectives were actively pursuing several leads that had developed throughout the night.
Despite the initial optimism from law enforcement that an arrest would be forthcoming, no suspect was immediately identified. In the days and weeks that followed, the investigation continued, but information about a potential suspect or any arrests in the case did not become public. The case has since been described as unsolved, with no indication that there has been a resolution or that any individual has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of Emmanuel Lopez III.
