In Jesup, Iowa, the life of a 22-year-old White/Caucasian female named Lindsay Marie Nichols was tragically cut short on the evening of March 21, 2012. A vibrant and ambitious woman, Lindsay was a 2008 graduate of Waterloo East High School where she had been a cheerleader, a softball player, and an honor roll student. Following her passion, she graduated from the Covenant School of Radiography in June 2011 and was studying for her boards.
It was during her clinicals at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo that she met Dr. Timothy Roses, a 44-year-old married radiologist from Texas who also worked there.
Lindsay and Roses began a months-long, long-distance relationship in May 2011. However, Lindsay ended the relationship in February 2012. In the wake of the breakup, Roses' behavior became concerning to Lindsay's friends, who noted he seemed to be stalking her online. On March 21, 2012, just hours before her death, Lindsay updated her Facebook relationship status, announcing she was in a new relationship with a man named Chase Weber.
That same day, in what appeared to be a premeditated act, Roses rented a truck and followed Lindsay to her new boyfriend's home in Jesup. As they arrived in the driveway, an argument broke out between Lindsay and Roses. Her new boyfriend, who was inside the house, witnessed the confrontation and immediately called 911. During the altercation, Roses tried to get Lindsay into his truck, and when she refused, he fatally shot the young woman in the street before turning the gun on himself.
When authorities arrived, they found Lindsay critically wounded and Roses deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Lindsay was rushed to Covenant Medical Center, the very place she had pursued her career, but she succumbed to her injuries. The investigation, led by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, concluded that the tragic event was a murder-suicide perpetrated by Timothy Roses, a man who refused to accept the end of their relationship. The case was closed with the identification of Roses as the sole person responsible for Lindsay's death, leaving two families and a community to mourn the devastating loss.
