In the quiet town of Algona, Iowa, the holiday season of 1987 was shattered by a horrific act of violence that claimed the lives of an entire family. Among the victims was eleven-year-old Jennifer Chuang, a young girl visiting her grandparents for a festive family gathering. On December 30, 1987, what should have been a time of joy turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy inside the home of her maternal grandparents, John and Agnes Dreesman.
Jennifer, along with her mother, Marilyn
Chuang, and her two brothers, twelve-year-old Jason and eight-year-old Joshua, had traveled from their home in Honolulu to celebrate the holidays. The family reunion took a dark and violent turn when Marilyn's brother, Robert Dreesman, a forty-year-old chiropractor, opened fire on his own family. In a matter of seconds, the lives of Jennifer, her mother, brothers, and grandparents were tragically cut short.
The perpetrator of this devastating act was identified as Robert Dreesman. Described by some as a quiet and withdrawn individual, it is believed that he may have felt neglected and harbored resentment towards his family. After carrying out the killings, Robert turned the gun on himself, ending his own life at the scene. Due to the murder-suicide nature of the crime, there were no arrests made in connection with the deaths.
