In the small city of Estherville, Iowa, the life of 30-year-old Michaela Lynne Jordan, a Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and violent end on the evening of Wednesday, February 26, 2014. A mother of four, Michaela was at her home in the Green Acres Mobile Home Park when she was shot. The incident unfolded in the presence of her four children, her mother, her brother, and two nephews, who were all inside the residence at the time.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene
following a 911 call just before 8 p.m. reporting a person had been shot. Upon arrival, they found Michaela with a single gunshot wound; she was pronounced deceased at her home. The investigation into her death was a collaborative effort involving the Estherville Police Department, the Emmet County Sheriff's Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and other local and state agencies.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, 35-year-old Scott Anthony Sudbeck, who was identified as Michaela's boyfriend. Early the following morning, a tactical team executed a search warrant at a residence on North 7th Street in Estherville in an effort to locate the firearm and other evidence connected to the shooting. Sudbeck was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Investigators stated that Michaela was the intended target and that there was no danger to the public.
Scott Sudbeck was later found guilty of the first-degree murder of Michaela Lynne Jordan. During the sentencing, heartbreaking victim impact statements were read by Michaela's mother and her four children, who spoke of their profound loss and the sadness of their mother not being there to see them grow up. Sudbeck was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.
