In the early morning hours of February 26, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in a quiet neighborhood. Martin Lawrence, a 45-year-old Black/African American male, lost his life in what was determined to be a devastating accident. A probation officer with the department of corrections, he was returning to his home after a day of work, a routine he had likely followed countless times before.
As he stepped out of his vehicle, a fateful moment occurred.
His handgun, which he had been carrying, slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground. The impact caused the weapon to discharge, sending a single bullet into his leg. The projectile traveled upward, causing severe internal injuries that would ultimately prove fatal.
Deputies from the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene around 12:30 a.m., where they found someone administering CPR to Lawrence. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Waterloo, but despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead. Investigators concluded that the shooting was accidental, and as a result, no arrests were made and no suspects were sought in connection with the incident.
