In the quiet town of West Union, Iowa, the life of a 27-year-old Caucasian woman, Morgan Elizabeth Kaye, was tragically cut short on the evening of March 21, 2016. Just before 9 p.m., the sound of gunshots shattered the peace near an apartment building on Linden Street. When Fayette County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Morgan lying on the ground outside the complex, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly identified a suspect, 27-year-old Anthony Ray Hebert, also of West Union. He was seen leaving the area in his pickup truck shortly after the shooting. A search for Hebert ensued, and he was later found approximately 16 miles north of the initial scene, just south of Calmar on Highway 150. He was deceased in his vehicle from what authorities determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Fayette County Sheriff, Marty Fisher, described the tragic event as a murder-suicide. The incident was further investigated by the West Union Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, who worked to piece together the circumstances that led to the devastating loss of two young lives. Both Morgan Kaye and Anthony Hebert were students at Upper Iowa University at the time of their deaths.
