Cavanna Shacoria Smith, a 25-year-old African American woman from Houston, Texas, tragically passed away on October 6, 2021. She was a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice and was working towards her master's degree in the same field. Cavanna was also an entrepreneur and a devoted member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church.
On the day of her death, Cavanna had informed her boyfriend, Kwanmaine Travion Boyd, that she was pregnant.
Boyd, who was 25 years old, did not take the news well. Cavanna went to Boyd's residence to collect money he owed her, but the situation escalated, and she was shot by Boyd. Her body was later found on the side of Reid Street and Irvington.
Boyd was arrested on November 9, 2021, and charged with capital murder. During the investigation, police found a positive pregnancy test, a note, and an ultrasound picture in Boyd's apartment. The case drew significant media attention due to the tragic circumstances and the fact that Cavanna was pregnant at the time of her death.
