The new year had barely begun in Des Moines, Iowa, when tragedy struck. Just hours into January 1, 2017, a young life was cut short. Frederico Thompson, an 18-year-old Caucasian male, was shot and killed in what became the city's first homicide of the year. He was a student at Scavo High School, nearing his graduation.
