In the quiet community of Camanche, Iowa, a confrontation on February 1, 2017, ended in the tragic death of 22-year-old Nicholas Luskey of Fulton, Illinois. The incident unfolded around 9:30 a.m. in the 610 block of 5th Avenue, where police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Luskey near a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound to his mid-torso.
He was initially taken to Mercy Medical Center before being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, where he was pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m.
The man identified as the shooter was 25-year-old Derick Carroll of Clinton, Iowa. The investigation that followed revealed a tense situation rooted in a past relationship. Luskey had been monitoring the home of a woman he had previously dated. On the morning of the shooting, Luskey blocked a car occupied by the woman and Carroll, preventing them from leaving. An altercation ensued when Luskey pulled Carroll from the vehicle.
During the struggle, Luskey reportedly got his hands on the barrel of a handgun that Carroll was legally carrying. Fearing that he would lose control of the weapon and that both he and the woman would be killed, Carroll fired the gun. After a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, the Clinton County Attorney announced in April 2017 that no charges would be filed against Derick Carroll. The prosecutor determined that Carroll had acted in self-defense. Authorities stated that all parties involved were detained at the scene and that they believed it was an isolated incident, posing no further danger to the public.
