In the early morning hours of October 18, 2017, the life of 29-year-old Dimitrius Summers, a Black/African American man from Rock Island, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in downtown Davenport, Iowa. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 300 block of East 2nd Street, an area described by local business owners as a typically welcoming and growing neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene, they found Summers with a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The area, known for its new businesses and a sense of community, was transformed into a crime scene, with yellow tape cordoning off the block where a baseball hat lay near a blood-spattered cloth.
