In the late hours of a Monday evening in Waterloo, Iowa, tragedy befell 48-year-old Diane Martin, a Black/African American female. On September 10, 2018, while inside her home at 84 Ricker Street, gunfire erupted from outside. A single bullet struck Martin, inflicting a fatal wound. She was rushed to UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital, but tragically, was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later confirmed that a single gunshot wound was the cause of her death.
The shock of Martin's violent death was compounded by an earlier family tragedy. Just four months prior, her 22-year-old son, Shavondes Martin, had also been a victim of gun violence, found shot to death in an alley in May of the same year. This devastating loss left the community and investigators questioning if the two homicides were connected. However, law enforcement officials stated that they were uncertain if Martin was the intended target, considering the possibility of a random house shooting, and could not definitively link her murder to that of her son.
In the wake of the shooting, Waterloo police investigators returned to the scene, continuing their search for answers. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, no arrests have been made in connection with Diane Martin's death. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a family to grapple with a double tragedy and a community searching for justice. While an arrest was made in the murder of her son, with his cousin being charged, authorities have indicated that they do not believe the two killings are related.
