In the quiet, rural landscape of Salix, Iowa, a burst of violence on June 1, 2021, ended the life of 40-year-old Russell Mohr, a White male from the nearby town of Mapleton. The tragic events unfolded at a residence on 250th Street, where what began as a gathering of individuals would ultimately become a scene of bloodshed. A dispute escalated, leading to a fatal shooting that left Mohr dead and a woman wounded.
Responding to a call, deputies from the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office
arrived to a grim discovery. In the front yard of the home, they found Russell Mohr's body, his life extinguished by gunfire. Nearby, a female victim was also suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg. She was quickly transported to a Sioux City hospital for medical attention. As investigators processed the scene and tended to the injured, the search for the person responsible was already underway.
Information obtained at the scene pointed to a suspect who had fled in a red Volkswagen. A description of the vehicle was broadcast, and a short time later, law enforcement located the car on Highway 141. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Marvin Hildreth Jr., was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Hildreth was charged in connection with the deadly shooting. He faced charges of second-degree murder for the death of Russell Mohr and going armed with intent.
