In the late summer of 2022, the life of Cortavius Benford, a 26-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Waterloo, Iowa. On Saturday, August 27th, Waterloo police were dispatched to an apartment complex at 226 Palmer Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Benford suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into Benford's death swiftly pointed towards a suspect. Savion Wilson, 23 years old at the time, was identified as the individual responsible for the fatal shooting. The two men were known to each other; they had been friends for a long time, and their families were close. However, in the months leading up to the tragic incident, their friendship had soured. A social media livestream recorded by Wilson about four months prior to the shooting revealed a disagreement between them, with Wilson making what were interpreted as threats of violence against Benford.
On the day of the shooting, Wilson, Benford, Benford's girlfriend, and a friend of Wilson's were all present at Benford's apartment. While there were no overt signs of conflict initially, the situation escalated less than an hour after the group had returned from a trip to a nearby store. Accounts from witnesses state that Wilson produced a handgun, and after playing with it, pointed it directly at Benford's head and pulled the trigger. Following the shooting, Wilson fled the scene on foot.
Subsequent police work led to the arrest of Savion Wilson, who was charged with first-degree murder. During his trial, Wilson claimed the shooting was an accident. However, evidence presented by the prosecution, including the prior threats made on social media and Wilson's actions after the shooting, painted a different picture. A jury ultimately did not believe Wilson's account of the events and found him guilty of first-degree murder in August 2023. This conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole in the state of Iowa. An appeal of the conviction was later denied, affirming the jury's decision. The cause of Cortavius Benford's death was determined to be a single gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
