In the late afternoon of August 24, 2021, a burst of violence shattered a rainy day in Waterloo, Iowa, claiming the life of 20-year-old Dayton L. Sanders, a Black male. The incident unfolded just after 4:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Washington Street, a busy area that also serves as U.S. Highway 218. Sanders was shot outside the Kwik Stop 3 convenience store.
Despite his injuries, Sanders managed to make his way across the street before collapsing in the highway median.
Emergency services arrived to find him suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed for medical attention but died a short time later. The shooting prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of the highway during the busy rush hour, causing significant traffic disruptions as police began their investigation into the city's fourth homicide of the year.
The investigation into Sanders' death led to arrests. Initially, a teenager was detained in connection with the fatal shooting. Later, Waterloo police made a second arrest in the case, bringing another individual into custody.
