In the late afternoon of August 24, 2021, a burst of violence shattered a rainy day in Waterloo, Iowa, claiming the life of 20-year-old Dayton L. Sanders, a Black male. The incident unfolded just after 4:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Washington Street, a busy area that also serves as U.S. Highway 218. Sanders was shot outside the Kwik Stop 3 convenience store.
