In early January of 2019, the life of 35-year-old Steven Paul Becker, a White male, was tragically cut short. His body was discovered in the basement of a residence on Church Street in Waterloo on January 11, 2019. An autopsy later confirmed that he had died on January 9 as a result of a homicide.
The investigation into his death quickly led to a suspect. Kyle M. Roider, who was 30 years old at the time, was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with Becker's death. The discovery of Becker's body was made in the basement of Roider's home.
The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution and defense presented conflicting narratives of the events that led to Becker's death. The prosecution argued for a conviction on the murder charge. However, the defense maintained that Roider had acted in self-defense. During the trial, it was revealed that Becker had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. A toxicology report indicated the presence of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana in Becker's system at the time of his death.
After a week of court proceedings, the jury delivered its verdict. Kyle Roider was found not guilty of both first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. After having been incarcerated for approximately two and a half years, Roider was released from the Monroe County Courthouse as a free man.
