In the early morning hours of May 23, 2021, the life of 27-year-old Davonta Sellers, a Black / African American male from Waterloo, Iowa, was tragically cut short by gun violence. The incident unfolded in the downtown area of Waterloo, near West Fourth and Jefferson Streets, a location known for its bars and nightlife. Police had been dispatched to the area shortly after midnight to address a report of disorderly conduct.
As officers arrived, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the night, causing chaos as people fled the scene.
Amid the confusion, officers discovered Davonta Sellers lying on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound. Immediate medical attention was rendered, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts to save him, Sellers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death marked the third homicide in Waterloo in a span of just eight days, leaving the community on edge.
