In the pre-dawn hours of December 27, 2020, the life of 31-year-old Black / African American male, Elijah Lemont Hunt, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Waterloo, Iowa. The incident occurred around 4:30 AM near the intersection of Dane and Iowa streets. Hunt, who was originally from Bolingbrook, Illinois, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting.
A former basketball player for Wartburg College from 2008 to 2010, he had previously resided in Waverly and Waterloo and was remembered by his former team as a great competitor who always had a smile on his face.
Following the shooting, the Waterloo Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Authorities appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information or who might have social media posts or video recordings of the incident to come forward. In an effort to generate leads, Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers announced a reward of $1,500 for any information that would lead to an arrest in connection with Hunt's death.
Despite the ongoing investigation and the plea for public assistance, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into the shooting death of Elijah Hunt remains open as authorities continue to seek information that could bring those responsible to justice. The community, particularly those connected to Wartburg College, mourned the loss of a man remembered for his competitive spirit and cheerful demeanor.
