On a Tuesday morning, the first of November in 2016, Darrell Deshay Lanier, a 22-year-old Black male from Waterloo, Iowa, was walking home alone from his cousin's house, a daily routine for him. This predictable path made him an easy target for what police would later describe as a deliberate attack. At approximately 10:20 a.m., in the 400 block of Rhey Street, just three blocks from his own home, numerous gunshots echoed through the neighborhood.
