In the pre-dawn hours of Christmas Day in 2022, Montreail Dungy, a 46-year-old Black man from Fort Dodge, Iowa, was found deceased in his vehicle. The initial discovery, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of 10th Avenue Southwest, quickly turned into a homicide investigation. It was determined that Dungy had been shot multiple times in the head and chest at close range while sitting in his car.
The shooting is believed to have taken place about 24 minutes before a 911 call was made, as witnesses initially did not realize anyone was inside the vehicle.
The investigation into Dungy's death led authorities to identify two half-brothers as suspects: Lakendrick Antwon Mosley, 31, and Darwin Laquell Green, 27. Following a three-month investigation that involved numerous search warrants and witness interviews, arrest warrants were issued for both men in late March 2023. They were apprehended in Minnesota and subsequently charged. Mosley faced a charge of first-degree murder, while Green was charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder.
According to the criminal complaints, eyewitness accounts and video surveillance placed Mosley at the scene, identifying him as the shooter. Green was accused of driving Mosley to and from the location of the murder. Further evidence from cell phone data corroborated that the two men were together shortly before and after the shooting and were in the vicinity of the crime scene. Witnesses also testified that Mosley had been given a firearm consistent with the type used in the homicide just 15 minutes prior to the incident at a location a few blocks away. The motive appeared to stem from a disagreement between Dungy and Green.
In August 2023, a jury found Lakendrick Mosley guilty of first-degree murder following a week-long trial. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Darwin Green also faced his charge of aiding and abetting murder. The conviction of Mosley was later upheld by the Iowa Court of Appeals in April 2025 after he appealed based on a claim of insufficient evidence.
