Derrick L. Stewart had a personality that could light up a room and a love for making people laugh. His family believed the 27-year-old could have been a comedian, as he was always cracking jokes. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 9, 1998, to Regina Roshelle Moore and Jermane A. Erving, Derrick attended Dunbar Academy in the city. He later moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he worked various jobs, most recently at Prestage Foods in Eagle Grove.
Derrick was a man who loved rapping, dancing, and playing basketball, but his greatest joy was found in spending time with his family. He was a loving father to his son, Zavian, and was close to his many siblings, aunts, cousins, and friends.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 26, 2026, an altercation broke out outside the 4th Street Depot, a bar and grill in the 300 block of South Fourth Street in Fort Dodge. At around 12:29 a.m., gunfire erupted. A Fort Dodge police officer who was on patrol nearby arrived to a chaotic scene, witnessing a man actively firing a handgun into a crowd where people were already on the ground with gunshot wounds. Derrick sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the shooting. He was rushed by ambulance to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.
Two other men were also wounded in the shooting. Jayvion A. Wilson, 21, was shot multiple times and hospitalized in stable condition. Laquwon A. Moore, 29, who was Derrick's brother, was treated for a single gunshot wound and released. Court documents state that the suspect fired at the responding officer. The officer returned fire, and the gunman reportedly ran into the bar. The officer pursued him, and the suspect was apprehended on a nearby street by Webster County Sheriff's deputies. Neighbors reported being woken up by as many as 20 gunshots.
The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Jamarcus Gully of Fort Dodge. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for Derrick's death, attempted murder of a peace officer, and two counts of attempted murder for the injuries to Wilson and Moore. Gully was booked into the Webster County Jail and held on a $2 million cash-only bond. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for October 8, 2026.
Because the incident involved an officer firing their weapon, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was brought in to assist the Fort Dodge Police Department with the investigation, as is standard protocol. The officer who fired at Gully was placed on critical incident leave, which is also standard procedure.
Derrick was remembered by his family as a man with the best personality who loved children. He is survived by his son, Zavian Segovia; his mother and stepfather, Regina and Terry Baker; his father, Jermane Erving; and numerous siblings, including Raquwon Erving, Laquwon Moore, Jalen Erving, Jacoby Erving, Mark Baker, Jermane Erving Jr., Ja’Leyah Erving, Jermiah Erving, Raven Chancellor, and Cameron Cline. He was also survived by his aunt, Deloris Rodriguez, many other relatives, and his best friend, Ronlay Arencibia. He was preceded in death by his uncle and a best friend. His family planned to hold private services at a later date.
As of late September 2026, the investigation into the shooting was ongoing by both the Fort Dodge Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Jamarcus Gully was in custody awaiting his court proceedings.
