In Fort Dodge, Iowa, a young man's life was cut tragically short on a Saturday afternoon. DaKarie Jayvon James, a 14-year-old Caucasian male, died on June 17, 2023, from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident that led to his death unfolded around noon in the 1200 block of First Avenue North. When first responders arrived, they discovered James in the front yard of a residence.
He received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. Two days after the incident, police arrested 19-year-old Isaac Alexander Bachman of Fort Dodge. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with James's death. Authorities revealed that the shooting was preceded by a "significant" argument between Bachman and James on Snapchat earlier that morning. According to investigators, Bachman had invited James to his home.
Further details emerged during legal proceedings, painting a picture of the moments leading up to the fatal encounter. The prosecution stated that James and Bachman, who were once friends, had a "war of words" before James went to Bachman's residence. They allege that after a brief verbal exchange through a gate, Bachman retrieved an AR-15-style rifle and shot James. It was also stated that immediately after the shooting, Bachman turned to his girlfriend, kissed her, and said, "I would kill anyone for you."
Bachman's defense, however, claims he acted in self-defense. Security camera footage from a neighboring property captured part of the incident. The video shows Bachman in his backyard with two other individuals before he picks up the rifle and moves toward a wooden privacy fence gate. After the gate is briefly pushed, Bachman is seen firing the rifle. His attorney has pointed out that Bachman immediately unloaded the weapon, waited for the police to arrive, and informed them of where the gun was. Following the shooting, police found two illegal handguns in Bachman's home, though the rifle used was legally purchased and owned. Initially held on a $1 million cash bond, Bachman's bond was later reduced to $250,000 cash-only.
