On the evening of July 4, 2023, as the sky above Fort Dodge, Iowa, was illuminated by fireworks, 15-year-old Jameel C. Redding-Pettigrew, a Black male, was walking home. At approximately 9:44 p.m., in the area of South 15th Street and Fourth Avenue South, the celebratory sounds were pierced by the crackle of gunfire.
