He was known for his love of music and dancing, and he cherished his daughter, Draya LaNay McCullers, who brought him immense joy. On the night of June 20, 2020, Devonte Leon Hall was fatally shot in the 2400
block of Fairview Drive in Gastonia. According to reports, an unknown assailant fired multiple shots, striking Devonte and causing his death at the scene. The investigation into his murder revealed that Chrishawn Deandre Jowers, a 26-year-old male from Winston-Salem, was the primary suspect. Jowers was charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The circumstances surrounding Devonte's death were harrowing. Jowers allegedly threatened Devonte with a 9mm handgun, stole an iPhone and $400 in cash from him, and then proceeded to shoot him. Jowers was taken into custody on June 25, 2020, and booked into the Gaston County Jail without bond. He faced additional misdemeanor charges, including assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats, which were pending in Forsyth County.
Devonte's death not only devastated his family but also highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in the community. The legal proceedings against Jowers were closely followed, as the community sought justice for Devonte and his loved ones.
