In the community of Magna, Utah, a conflict over gang representation led to the tragic death of 40-year-old Hispanic male, Carlos Martinez, on May 4, 2014. The events of that day began with a verbal altercation between Martinez and two younger males concerning their gang affiliations in his neighborhood. This initial dispute escalated, with Martinez and another person reportedly seeking out the two males to continue the argument later that day.
The situation turned fatal when one of the
individuals from the earlier confrontation, 17-year-old Joe Perez, decided to retaliate. He was driven back to Martinez's home on Armoridge Drive by another male. As Martinez came out of his house, Perez approached and opened fire, shooting multiple times before fleeing in the waiting vehicle. A Unified Police officer responding to the shooting found Martinez bleeding profusely in front of his garage. He was transported to Intermountain Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. At the scene, investigators recovered nine spent 9mm shell casings.
For over a year, detectives worked with limited information, initially only knowing they were looking for potentially two suspects in a gray car. A breakthrough came when they identified Perez as one of the individuals who had argued with Martinez. The driver of the vehicle, Skyler Burnasconi, later informed police that he had transported Perez to Martinez's home and witnessed the shooting. According to Burnasconi, Perez hid the murder weapon in his car and retrieved it the following day. Martinez's daughter also identified Perez from a Facebook photo as one of the men who had been in the argument with her father.
Joe Perez, a known gang member, was charged as an adult with murder and several other felonies. In November 2016, a jury found the now 19-year-old Perez guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to serve at least 32 years to life in prison. Skyler Burnasconi was not charged in connection with the murder. The motive for the killing was reportedly rooted in a feeling of disrespect Perez felt following the earlier arguments with Martinez. This tragic incident left behind a grieving family and a community concerned about the growing issue of gang violence in their area.
