On the evening of May 28, 2021, a Hispanic man named Omar Isael Gomez Salazar, 28 years old, traveled from his home in Colorado to Magna, Utah, for work. That night, he arrived at a barbecue taking place at a residence on Westbury Drive. The gathering turned tragic when Omar was fatally shot shortly after he got out of his car. The incident was reportedly preceded by a phone argument between Omar and another man at the party.
Witnesses at the scene and a Ring doorbell camera captured the
harrowing moments. The video footage showed a man, later identified as 44-year-old Juan Alvarez, confronting Omar as he walked toward the house. Alvarez allegedly raised a gun and fired a single shot. After Omar fell to the ground, the footage showed the suspect pacing for a moment before walking over and kicking him. The suspect then reportedly pointed his weapon at two other people who were in the vehicle with Omar, pulling the trigger, though the gun did not fire.
Following the shooting, Juan Alvarez fled the scene. Law enforcement located him hours later, approximately 117 miles away, and he was taken into custody after a police chase. Alvarez faced multiple charges, including aggravated murder, failure to stop at the command of a law officer, carrying a dangerous weapon under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and driving under the influence. Omar Isael Gomez Salazar, who was a father of two, was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding officers.
