In the early hours of a Sunday morning, a house party in a quiet Magna, Utah neighborhood turned into a scene of violence and loss. On August 15, 2021, 18-year-old Ivan Valenzuela, a male of Hispanic descent, was shot and killed at a gathering on Evening Light Cove. The party, attended by a large group of young people, was shattered by gunfire just after 1 a.m., leaving chaos in its wake.
When Unified Police arrived, they discovered a tragic scene with two young men deceased and a teenage girl wounded.
Ivan Valenzuela was not the only fatality that night; 19-year-old Juan Valentine Rodriguez was also killed in the shooting. A 17-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to her arm but survived the attack. In the immediate aftermath, the investigation was hampered by the fact that many of the partygoers were intoxicated, making it difficult for detectives to gather clear witness statements. Despite the initial challenges, law enforcement began to piece together the events of that fatal night through evidence collection, which included a crucial examination of social media communications.
The investigation led authorities to 19-year-old Patrocinio Perez, a documented gang member from Salt Lake City. By March 2022, Perez was charged with two counts of aggravated murder for the deaths of Valenzuela and Rodriguez. According to charging documents, Perez had gone to the party with the specific intention of confronting the two victims because he believed they had been "talking negative about his homies." Investigators found social media messages where Perez allegedly admitted to the shootings.
Further investigation revealed a pattern of violent behavior from Perez, who was identified by authorities as a "shot caller" within his gang. He was connected to other shootings and faced additional charges for allegedly firing into the home of a witness in a separate homicide case.
