In the late afternoon of April 8, 2022, a violent altercation in Magna, Utah, claimed the life of 20-year-old Hispanic male, Fernando Ruesga. The fatal encounter unfolded outside the Colony Farms apartment complex, shattering the daytime quiet with gunfire. Ruesga was discovered deceased in the driver's seat of his Dodge Charger, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses reported seeing a physical fight between two men in the parking lot.
The altercation escalated, and both men retreated to their respective vehicles. As Ruesga attempted to drive away, the other man reportedly opened fire, firing numerous shots into Ruesga's car. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle. Investigators found thirteen shell casings near Ruesga's car.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 22-year-old Noah Ezequiel Valenzuela Sanchez as the primary suspect. According to charging documents, the conflict between Ruesga and Sanchez may have stemmed from gang rivalry. A woman who reportedly had children with Ruesga and was in a relationship with Sanchez at the time told authorities the two men had an ongoing dispute related to their gang affiliations.
Following the incident, Sanchez allegedly fled in a Maserati, which was later found abandoned in a Salt Lake City apartment complex on April 12. An arrest warrant was issued, and Sanchez was charged with murder, obstruction of justice, and multiple counts of illegally discharging a firearm. He was subsequently arrested at the end of April 2022. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence in the community.
