In the quiet expanse of a private ranch in Duchesne County, Utah, a day of recreational target shooting took a tragic turn, ending the life of 61-year-old Rocky Mecham, a Caucasian male from Mountain Home. On the morning of February 23, 2016, Mecham was participating in long-range shooting with two other men, acting as a target spotter for them. The Duchesne County Sheriff's Office received a call and
responded to the scene at the L.C. Ranch at approximately 8:45 a.m. Investigators determined that a communication error occurred between Mecham and one of the shooters, 64-year-old Greg Timothy of Altamont. This miscommunication led to Timothy accidentally shooting Mecham.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced Mecham dead at the scene. His body was subsequently transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. The authorities investigated the incident and concluded that the shooting was accidental. As a result, there were no arrests made, and no suspects were sought in connection with the fatal incident.
