In the early morning hours of July 26, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Salt Lake City, Utah, that cut short the life of Shawn J. Manymules, a 26-year-old Native American male. The incident occurred near Pioneer Park, at approximately 1:39 a.m. in front of the 360 Apartments located at 360 S. 400 West. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing the sound of multiple gunshots, piercing the quiet of the night.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a group of people
attempting to render aid to Manymules, who was lying on the ground. These bystanders were performing CPR, a desperate effort to save his life. Medical personnel quickly took over, but their attempts were in vain. Manymules had sustained two gunshot wounds to his chest and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Despite the accounts of gunshots, investigators found that no one they spoke to had actually witnessed the shooting itself. The case remains an unsolved homicide. Authorities reported that two unidentified suspects were seen fleeing the area after the shooting. They were last observed running southbound on 400 West before heading west through the Big D Construction company property.
Shawn, who was known to frequent the Pioneer Park area and the local men's shelter during the summer of 2017, was remembered in an obituary. His funeral services were held in Dennehotso, Arizona, where he was also laid to rest. The Salt Lake City Police Department has continued to ask for the public's help in bringing those responsible for his death to justice.
