On the evening of February 12, 2018, a gathering outside a residence in Clinton, Utah, turned deadly, leading to the shooting death of 21-year-old Deven Tomas Gallegos of North Ogden. The young man was not on the right path at all times, but he had a laugh and smile that could light up the darkest of rooms and had been saved in November of 2017.
Just after 9:30 p.m., police in Clinton received calls about multiple gunshots in the area of 1100 N. 1000 West.
Witnesses reported seeing several vehicles leaving the scene with their headlights off. Later that night, Deven Gallegos was found deceased inside a truck in the parking lot of a Pizza Hut in Clearfield. He had been a passenger in a Ford Focus that was fired upon during the incident in Clinton. The driver of the vehicle, a woman, fled the scene and met with another individual at the Pizza Hut, where they called for help.
The investigation centered around the home of Brandon Corey Weaver, where the shooting took place. According to court documents, a man and his daughter, with Deven as her passenger, had gone to Weaver's house to return property that had allegedly been stolen from Weaver. While they were outside, an unknown individual began shooting at both of their vehicles. Deven was struck by a bullet as his driver was attempting to flee the area.
Detectives recovered shell casings, ammunition, and a bullet from the scene. While Brandon Corey Weaver was investigated in connection with the incident, as of March 2018, he had not been named a suspect in the shooting itself. He did, however, face unrelated theft and burglary charges. The investigation into Deven Gallegos's death was still active at that time, with police working to identify the shooter.
