In the early morning hours of June 13, 2021, a verbal confrontation in downtown Salt Lake City tragically escalated, ending the life of 22-year-old England Sienna Pauulu. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near 125 W. 300 South, where officers, hearing gunshots, found Pauulu on the ground with gunshot wounds. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance at the scene, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that Pauulu had an encounter with three males,
possibly after leaving a nearby club. The verbal dispute turned violent when one of the individuals, a teenager, produced a gun and shot Pauulu. Police later arrested a juvenile in connection with the shooting and recovered the firearm used in the incident. The other two males involved in the altercation were questioned by investigators, but only the juvenile was initially arrested.
Further legal proceedings identified the suspected shooter as 16-year-old Alex Ruiz-Martinez and another man, 24-year-old Jaime Dirzo-Portugal, who was accused of handing the firearm to the teenager. The altercation reportedly began after Pauulu and Dirzo-Portugal bumped shoulders while crossing the street. In a significant turn of events, a judge dismissed the murder charge against Ruiz-Martinez, ruling that he acted in self-defense, believing Dirzo-Portugal's life was in danger during the fight. However, the judge ruled that the murder charge against Dirzo-Portugal would stand.
