In the winter of 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Salt Lake City, claiming the life of 20-year-old Angel Lopez-Salinas. On the evening of February 18th, Angel, his 19-year-old brother Lauro "Raul" Lopez-Salinas, and their 17-year-old friend Armando Cuenca-Curiel were inside a Ford Explorer parked at 325 E. Park Creek Lane. An altercation broke out, resulting in a fatal shooting that would leave all three young men dead. Angel sustained gunshot wounds to his head and right bicep.
While Cuenca-Curiel was pronounced dead at the scene, Angel succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The investigation into the triple homicide led police to 19-year-old Gerald Radckiff Grant. Grant, who was also injured in the incident with a gunshot to his leg, was arrested and subsequently charged with three counts of aggravated murder. Following the shooting, Grant was picked up by associates and later taken to the hospital by his girlfriend. Investigators found a black semi-automatic pistol, shell casings, marijuana, brass knuckles, and multiple cellphones inside the SUV where the shooting occurred.
In the face of the charges, Grant claimed that his actions were in self-defense. He alleged that the three men he shot had been attempting to rob him and had "beat on him" before he opened fire. The encounter was reportedly set up for a marijuana transaction. An informant told investigators they had put Grant in touch with the three others. The case against Grant proceeded through the legal system, leaving a trail of questions and a community mourning the loss of three young lives.
