In a tragic turn of events on October 26, 2022, Christopher Ryan Mortensen, a 42-year-old White / Caucasian male from Sandy, Utah, lost his life in a fatal shooting stemming from a road rage incident. The confrontation began on Interstate 15 when Rodrigo A. Monroy, 32, of Riverton, allegedly cut off Mortensen's vehicle and "brake checked" him. This aggressive driving led to an exchange of verbal hostilities and hand gestures between the two men.
The conflict escalated when both drivers
exited the freeway at 10600 South. Mortensen pulled over near a gas station, and Monroy parked his vehicle behind him. Mortensen, who was hauling a large trailer, got out of his truck and approached Monroy's vehicle. He then struck the driver's side window of Monroy's truck with his hand. In response, Monroy pulled out a handgun.
A struggle for the weapon ensued through the open window of Monroy's car. Mortensen attempted to disarm Monroy but was unsuccessful. According to a passenger in Mortensen's truck, Mortensen was backing away from Monroy's vehicle in a defensive posture when Monroy fired a single shot, striking him in the chest. An autopsy later confirmed that Mortensen died from a single gunshot wound to the heart. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodrigo A. Monroy was arrested and initially charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and felony discharge of a firearm. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and held without bail. In September 2023, Monroy pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, a second-degree felony. He faces a potential prison sentence of one to 15 years.
Christopher Mortensen was a husband and a father of four children. He was remembered by his family as a doting father, a hard worker, and the sole provider for his family. Friends and family described him as a protector who would give anyone the shirt off his back. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as a missionary in England.
