Summary based on 21 sources
On November 20, 2022, Nichole Olsen, a 29-year-old mother, was fatally shot in a parking lot near The Exchange nightclub in Salt Lake City, Utah. The incident began with an altercation at the nightclub involving Olsen, her friends Charlie and Dylan, and her boyfriend PJ and two other individuals, Dustin James Pedersen and his friend David Maynard.

According to the accounts, Pedersen and Maynard had a confrontation with Olsen and her group at the nightclub. Pedersen allegedly assaulted one of Olsen's friends by inappropriately grabbing her, leading to the group deciding to leave the club. The altercation continued in a parking lot at 300 Southwest Temple, about a block away from The Exchange. Here, another confrontation ensued, during which Pedersen shot and killed Olsen. The shooting occurred after Olsen's boyfriend, PJ, and Maynard got into a fight, and Pedersen claimed he attempted to fire a warning shot but ended up hitting Olsen instead.

Following the shooting, Pedersen and Maynard fled the scene, driving back to their residence in Kanab, Utah, a journey of about 5 hours. Pedersen did not immediately contact the police or return to Salt Lake City. Instead, he surrendered to the Kane County Sheriff's Office 24 hours later, claiming self-defense. Pedersen informed the authorities that he had shot a round from his gun to scare people who were fighting and that a female had been hit by the bullet and killed.

Pedersen was initially allowed to leave the sheriff's office but was later detained after the Salt Lake Homicide Department instructed the Kane County Sheriff's Office to pick him up and hold him. He was then transported back to Salt Lake County and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on first-degree felony murder charges. In February 2023, Pedersen was released to home confinement on a $100,000 bond.

David Maynard, Pedersen's friend, was also involved in the altercation but specific details about his current status or any charges against him are not provided in the available sources.

The autopsy confirmed that Olsen died from a gunshot wound to the chest, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide. A. 22 caliber shell casing was recovered from the parking lot, and a Smith & Wesson Walther. 22 handgun was later found in the trunk of Pedersen's BMW.
