On a spring afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut, the life of 29-year-old Lyndell Moore, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire. It was just before 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015, when the incident that led to his death began. Moore was on Townsend Street when he was shot multiple times in the torso while behind the wheel of his car.
After being wounded, Moore attempted to drive away, turning onto Charles Street.
However, due to his injuries, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked car at the intersection of Orchard Place and Charles Street. Initially, those who heard the crash thought it was a medical emergency, with one witness stating they believed the driver was having a seizure. It wasn't until emergency responders arrived and removed his shirt that the gunshot wounds were discovered. Moore was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
In the immediate aftermath, New Haven police began their investigation, closing off Townsend Street to search for the crime scene. Witnesses reported seeing one to three men in gray hooded sweatshirts fleeing the area towards Henry Street after the shooting. Despite these initial leads, police acknowledged they were short on information about the person or persons responsible for Moore's death. An arrest was made at the scene of the homicide later that day, but police clarified that it was unrelated to the shooting investigation.
Lyndell Moore was remembered by friends and family as a hardworking father of three girls who had a job in construction. His life had been touched by tragedy before, as his mother had been murdered by his stepfather in 1998. The police investigation into his own homicide continued, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of his killer or killers.
