In the spring of 2016, the life of Tysean Johnson, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in New Haven, Connecticut. On the afternoon of April 22, Johnson was discovered unresponsive inside a running vehicle on Huntington Street, located west of Winchester Avenue. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A resident of nearby West Haven, Johnson was born in New Haven on May 4, 1990.
Those who knew him remembered his passion for basketball, video games, rap music, and sneakers. His sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief through his family, friends, and the broader community, leaving them to mourn the loss of a young life. A celebration of his life was held on April 29, 2016, at Varick AME Zion Church in New Haven, followed by his interment at Evergreen Cemetery.
In the wake of the shooting, the New Haven Police Department launched an investigation into Johnson's death, classifying it as a homicide. Detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting in broad daylight. Authorities publicly appealed for assistance, urging anyone with information about the incident or potential witnesses to come forward and contact detectives.
