Summary based on 6 sources
On a late summer afternoon, the life of Shane Slinsky, an 18-year-old White/Caucasian male from Stamford, came to a violent and tragic end. On August 27, 2016, he was found on Wood Terrace in Bridgeport, having been shot twice in the head. First responders and a bystander tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, becoming the city's sixth homicide victim of the year. The initial theory from authorities was that the fatal encounter was the result of a drug transaction that had gone awry. However, as the investigation deepened, a more calculated and treacherous plot began to emerge, suggesting that the young man was not a participant in a soured deal, but the target of a robbery orchestrated by those he trusted.

The investigation slowly unraveled a plan that involved betrayal. Police determined that Slinsky had been lured from his hometown of Stamford to the quiet side street in Bridgeport by individuals he considered his friends. Among them was Jeremy Middleton, a young man who Slinsky's mother would later describe as her son's best friend. The motive appeared to be robbery. Just a few months prior to his murder, Slinsky had received a significant financial settlement from the city of Stamford stemming from a troubled and damaging relationship with a former high school teacher. Investigators and his family came to believe that knowledge of this money made him a target.

It would take time, but justice for Shane Slinsky began to take shape with a series of arrests. In March 2017, the first suspect, Jeremy Middleton, was taken into custody and charged with felony murder and robbery. The following year, in March 2018, two more arrests were made. Onaje Smith of Bridgeport was charged with murder, and authorities identified him as the one who pulled the trigger. Shortly after, Tyreik Gantt of Stamford was also arrested for his role in the fatal robbery. The investigation revealed that the three young men, who all had prior criminal records, had conspired to rob Slinsky. Ultimately, Middleton pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery. In October 2023, Onaje Smith pleaded guilty to murder and was later sentenced to 35 years in prison for the callous and cowardly act that ended a young man's life.
