On a late summer evening in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of Immanuel White, a 22-year-old Black / African American male, was cut short by gunfire. On September 10, 2016, at approximately 11:04 p.m., White was shot twice in the torso in the vicinity of 432 Wells Street. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death was recorded as the seventh homicide in Bridgeport that year.
At the time, police had not established a clear motive for the shooting that took place outside an apartment building and had not identified any suspects.
The investigation into White's murder quickly uncovered a violent incident from his recent past. Just months earlier, on April 10, White had been involved in another shooting stemming from a drug deal that had gone awry on Iranistan Avenue. In that altercation, both White and another man, Brandon Thompson, were shot. White sustained a gunshot wound to his wrist, which was not life-threatening. In that April incident, police considered White to be both a suspect and a victim. Authorities openly explored the possibility that his September murder was an act of retaliation connected to the earlier shooting.
Despite their efforts, the investigation into Immanuel White's death was hampered by a lack of cooperation from eyewitnesses. In December 2016, investigators announced they had obtained surveillance video that captured the graphic moments of the shooting in the apartment building's parking lot. They hoped this new evidence would lead to a breakthrough in the case. However, as of early 2017, no arrests had been made, and no suspects had been publicly identified.
