In the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 11, 2021, the life of 16-year-old Nigel Powell was tragically cut short. What was initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound would soon be revealed as a devastating accident among friends. Powell, a Black male, was inside a residence on Valley Avenue with three other juveniles when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to St.
Vincent's Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
As the Bridgeport Police Department delved into the investigation, witness interviews began to paint a different picture of the events that transpired. It became clear that another teenager was holding the firearm when it discharged. The focus of the investigation shifted to a 16-year-old male who was present in the room. This individual, later identified as Elijah Reid, was described as Powell's best friend. Accounts from the other two juveniles present revealed that Reid had been "playing" with the gun, dancing around the room with it, when it fired and struck Powell.
Initially, Reid told detectives that Powell was examining the gun when it went off. However, he later admitted to accidentally shooting his friend. The firearm, a 9mm Smith & Wesson, had been purchased by Reid. On October 18, 2021, the teenage suspect turned himself in to the police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and other firearm-related offenses. Due to the severity of the charges, a judge ruled that Reid would be tried as an adult.
In September 2023, Elijah Reid pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm. During the court proceedings, he expressed remorse and apologized to Powell's family. In January 2024, at the age of 18, Reid was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the sentence suspended after 10 years served, followed by five years of probation. The judge also ordered that Reid have no further contact with Nigel Powell's family, bringing a legal conclusion to a heartbreaking case that underscored the tragic consequences of gunplay among youths.
